The inconceivable photograph taking me back to the time the Twin Towers were being built and I was living in New York: a steel section of the Twin Towers, bent back in their collapse on 09/11/2001.

Invincible Silence, A Choice

A friend - no longer a friend. But once they reach what goes under the name of adulthood
Those who once were friends,  who now far away are no longer friends
Never come back, unless they reappear and are again on speaking terms

Friendships across
Joys
Desires
Sharing
Awkwardness
Disappointment
Weakness

Affinities evolve across time,
Some friendships hold, even become stronger,
Others wear off and dissolve - paths diverge, far, far away

Seldom is there an argument -
Worse still one feels betrayed
No room for nuance, at least for the time being
Sudden anger
Long-lasting wounds.
Other friends, consider that -
Serious offense, high treason

How could this relationship, which was so boisterously shattered, bear the name of friendship?
So tenuous
Built on brittle ground

Next come:
Entrenched positions, irrevocable resentment, stupidly irrevocable, because contrary,
Sometimes someone feels regret, a lot of regret,
Not to think about it, never to be indifferent, or only offhandedly

And yet, a memory in the mind, in the heart, unwittingly
Lingering
To think about it, to think about it no more, to think about it again, no more, again, and again
The unwavering labour of remembering
Some memory brought back to the mind on some occasion, active, provocative, subterranean, (some conversational undercurrent, as Nathalie Sarraute, a specialist in tropisms of all kinds, would say)
Meaningful dates, meaningful events, emotions

Time opens up many possibilities after one has left, disappeared, far away:
Expectation
Stasis
Metamorphosis
Change
Telling oneself or thinking that…

In the same timescape:
Leaving
No coming back
One’s back irredeemably, irrevocably turned,
Stopping one’s ears, not worth it, lost cause, irreversible situation,
Same old bickering
Nothing ever solved - never

Silence
Radical silence
Invincible silence
Or else
Vanquished silence
Speech regained
Utopia or reality

Going beyond,
Taking action, coming back
One’s sole responsibility and concern,
The effort no sooner made than forgotten,

Free choice

To meet again -
One’s will,
Or to meet again by chance - may be
Provoking chance, seizing chance,
The unimaginable made possible

Physical presence prevailing over recollection
Far from all angelism
Fixed opinions and preconceived judgements beginning to crack
What comes next is out of frame, belongs to the private sphere

Dream or nightmare, reality or phantasy
This object was handed down to me by my grandfather. It is made of steel. It was wrought at very high temperatures in the Schneider furnaces he managed, in Le Creusot. It tells about the craftsmanship and solidarity of people who teamed up against all odds during and after the Second World War. Dominique Schneider, kin to the Schneider family, told me that this piece of work is called “the friendship knot”.
